  27. As I mentioned in my post to c.s.a.announce - I feel it is about time 
  28. that Acornet was upgraded.  Most of the components have later 
  29. versions available or in some cases there are possible alternatives.

  31. It would be a pity if Acornet stagnated and it was just left up to 
  32. the hardy 'have a go's' to upgrade their own setups.  We need to keep 
  33. the momentum going since, with Termites seeming demise, Acornet is the 
  34. only other current alternative to the ANT suite.

  36. However before we can do much we need to discuss a few issues and 
  37. make a few decisions.  
  38.  
  39. Acornet 0.19 currently consists of the following programs and 
  40. versions:

  69. I've added in FreeTime v 1.03 and QEdit 0.58e

  71. If any of these are not the latest - please let me know (yes I know 
  72. theres a newsbase 0.59c - I'll do that shortly).

  74. The questions are :

  76. 1.  Should we stay with SlipDial or go for FreeDial ?
  77.     
  78. 2.  TTFN or Messenger ?
  79.  
  80.     R.Sergeant has aparently had a go at modifying the ttfn reader 
  81. after the sources were released a while ago by its original author.  
  82. He has 0.40 available from his site http://www.arcade.demon.co.uk/.  
  83. I don't know if anyone else is also developing ttfn any further.
  84. Also the long awaited release of Messenger has just taken place - 
  85. this can be downloaded from http://www.locutus.demon.co.uk/messenger.

  87. 3.  FreeNews or Newshound ?

  89. 4.  There is an issue of size.  The 0.19 archive as it stands is 
  90. nearly 3 Megs in size which is quite large.  With new versions of 
  91. things its set to get much bigger.  We need to consider ways to 
  92. reduce this as much as possible.

  94. One suggestion is to remove all the documentation and have that as a 
  95. seperate file. I don't think we want to include apps that aren;t 
  96. absolutely necessary.  But perhaps we could collect together other 
  97. apps into a seperate archive.  Such things could include !talker, 
  98. !uuencode, !newsfind, and ircclient perhaps and anything else you can 
  99. suggest.

  101. 5.   I'd like to keep 0.20 based on the freenet I stack - so that 
  102. users of earlier machines can use this but with all the apps 
  103. upgraded.  Then 0.21 we could upgrade the stack.  But to what ? 
  104. Freenet II or the Acorn stack ? Or as has been suggested already we 
  105. could perhaps do two 0.21a and 0.21b so people can choose.

  107. 6.  FreeFTP is not going to be developed any more since the author 
  108. is now working on a commercial one instead.  Do we keep it in - since 
  109. it is the only graphically based free one around ? Or do we remove it 
  110. altogether and perhaps create a simple guide to using ArcWeb for ftp 
  111. purposes.  I don't personally think sftp should be in it.  This could 
  112. be in the additional apps archive perhaps.

  114. 7.   The frontend itself.  What should we put in the additional blank 
  115. square ? POP ? something else ? leave blank ?  Should we add 
  116. aditional spaces ?  Perhaps we could make it so that if you drag a 
  117. recognised app to a blank square it automatically adds it into the 
  118. structure and puts up an icon in the blank square ?  Dunno - I'm just 
  119. rambling (It sounds like a lot of work).

  124. the length of the posting. We may have to have some form of voting on 
  125. some of these issues.

  128. to keep the posts short.

  133. Theres no time scale on this - however I'm of the opinion that its 
  134. better to release something occasionally with a few major changes 
  135. than to wait for ages till a relese of everything.
